Babymouse Beach Babe by Jennifer Holm
- Being a 'beach babe' doesn't unfold quite as Babymouse fantisized, in this enjoyable graphic novel for younger kids. Baving ignored her younger brother all summer, Babymouse finally realizes that the friend she's been looking for all summer is right under her nose. (10/07)
Geronimo Stilton series by 'Geronimo Stilton' (not in Doucette)
- A very popular series of 'mouse' adventures for beginning readers. Good for reluctant or ESL readers, for whom the use of different fonts, colors and most of all humour work well. (10/07)
Henry and Mudge in the Sparkle Days by Cynthia Rylant.
- One of Rylant’s excellent early readers. Warm and accessible. She also has another series about Mr. Putter and his cat. Often works in collaboration with Barry Moser, who’s a terrific illustrator and also writes books of his own.(11/06)
Junie B., First Grader by Barbara Park
- Part of the extremely popular Junie B. Jones series for beginning readers. Junie B always needs to find out why you can't do the things you've been told not to. Cute, funny and written from the perspective of how kids see the world. (10/07)
Keeley: The Girl from Turtle Mountain by Deborah Ellis
- From the Our Canadian Girl series, this is the first story about Keeley, a young girl who moves with her father to Frank, Alberta in 1901. Keeley likes her new home and makes new friends, but takes a dare that could be very dangerous.
Josie Smith by Magdalen Nabb
- An gentle early chapter book about the amusing misadventures of a young girl as she shops for the perfect birthday gift for her mother, blackens a blackboard, and cares for a lost cat. (12/06)
Once Upon A Blue Moose by Daniel Pinkwater
- An early chapter book (three short stories, actually) about a moose who learns to wait on tables, write a novel, go to Hollywood and solve a mystery. The book is genuinely funny and includes a section on wacky but true moose facts. (2/08)
